Cacophony in the Catalog: Finding and Resolving Dedups

Session Information

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (U of I) has more than 100,000 music scores, many of which are distinct scores (full score, different parts, etc.) but have the same title, publisher, publication date, and other key information leveraged for dedup keys. As a consortium member using Primo VE with dedup enabled, this is problematic, but to what extent? After iterative efforts to detect dedups at scale, our Music and Performing Arts Librarian still encountered problematic record groupings. Leveraging the Primo REST API, we quickly identified what records had been deduped and, with simple logic, estimated which dedups were desired and which were problematic. Attendees will be able to detect deduped records at scale and write simple logic for distinguishing between desirable and problematic deduping. U of I is still investigating the most optimal long-term solution and looks forward to learning from institutions facing similar challenges.

Finding Primo Dedups at Scale
Alma, Primo
At the end of the session, participants will be able to identify deduplicated records in Primo VE at scale.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to identify undesirable duplicates for music scores.
