Clean Up! Clean Up! Everybody Do Their Share: Data Cleanup Strategies for Migrations

Session Information

Data in library management systems (LMS) is often added and left alone for years or decades. Valdosta State University (VSU), an institution that is part of the University System of Georgia in the GALILEO consortium, was bracing itself for another LMS migration within a 7 year period. Notably, VSU inventoried most of its circulating collections within a 3 year period. This presentation will focus on how to mentally prepare yourself for migrating data and how to utilize staff across your library to complete data cleanup projects and inventories. This presentation will also provide resources on identifying collections that may need more attention due to neglect or changes in cataloging rules.

Data Cleanup Strategies Migration
Alma, None/General
At the end of this session, participants will be able to understand the importance of data clean up before a migration and how understanding the pain points of your collections can make migration easier in the long run. Participants will also be equipped with tools to prepare for their own data cleanup and how to articulate to higher-ups that data cleanups and inventories can be all-hands-on-deck projects.
